electronic music label sheik n beik announces its new release snbv013, an ep called daisy cutter by jem. this ep is the third release in their series aimed at celebrating the diversity and history of new york and its boroughs. as sheik n beik s hometown and source of constant inspiration, the label focuses on spotlighting and paying homage to the five boroughs of new york including manhattan, queens, brooklyn, staten island and the bronx. each borough s flag is given a modern and colorful twist via the cover art and design of each outer jacket. the first release in the series, manhattan, featured local nyc hero and co-founder of voodoo down records n conduit, and the second, kathisma resident mr. dello s vaadhoo ep. the new ep from jem, dedicated to the bronx, opens up with title track daisy cutter, which directly sets the tone of the release with a straightforward, dynamic techno, elevated by an eerie, dark atmosphere. it goes on with neb, a downtempo second track with a lighter tone that progressively gets back to the initial mysterious mood and capriciously brightens it with warmer back-and-forth sounds. next on the 12- is semiotic, a third track structured by a clever balance of deconstructed rhythms and sparse acid and synth melodies in the continuity of the lighter, warmer mood previously built up. the ep ends with temple, with a more aggressive accent animated by several lighter melodic layers and a stifled background bass.

hugo manuel is better known by his musical alias chad valley. a product of oxford’s prolific creative community, chad valley has amassed a catalogue that spans four studio releases, numerous collaborations and dozens of remixes. his 2010 debut — a self-titled exploration in swirling synths and sunburnt melodies — laid the groundwork for 2011’s equatorial ultravox, which gave his downtempo productions a decidedly more pop-leaning twist. it was with equatorial ultravox, and his 2013 album young hunger, that chad valley’s profile sprung forward, strengthened by a string of key touring slots supporting the likes of erasure, chvrches, active child and passion pit, and by his collaborations with el perro del mar, glasser, totally enormous extinct dinosaurs and twin shadow. after releasing 2015 s sparkling entirely new blue and continued touring extensively, as he now prepares to release his third full-length album in 2018. imaginary music includes the previously released singles “up again” and “la in august,” both of which bolster one of the strongest batches of material chad valley has yet delivered. the vinyl release includes a download code.

sterns edits returns after their well received and recently repressed amadou balake excursions, this time with ben gomori turning his hand to guinea for a third instalment in the series of re-works from the sterns music catalogue of african gems. balla et ses balladins were one of guinea s national orchestras formed as a result of the newly elected president, sekou toures authenticite policy of the early 1960s, which sought to promote guinea s cultural identity following independence from france in 1958. gomori takes the scalpel to two cuts recorded during their years on the state-run syliphone label, making good use of bandleader balla s lively trumpet playing. the gently haunting nyo is taken on a stomping slo-mo chug with a head-nodding bassline and stuttering fx creating a shimmering effect on the tropical guitars, while the rousing horns of wilikabo are laid over with rasping synth bass for a punchy juxtaposition. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and london s ben gomori.
